What does a Chartered Surveyor do?

The term “chartered surveyor” can cover a whole range of different meanings. But here at Donald Leslie & Co our main business is to help you understand exactly what you’re getting when buying a residential property.

At Donald Leslie, we have over 25 years property experience in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Middlesex areas. We’re your partners as you work through your property purchase, helping you recognise any issues and fully appreciate the condition of the property. We can support you with a variety of building and structural surveys and property valuation services.

We are entirely independent, which means we work for you, providing best advice.

The property can be occupied or unoccupied, furnished or unfurnished. The breadth of the survey can also be affected by things such as the availability of the current owner to answer questions, and even the weather! But as a RICS surveyor, Donald Leslie has the training and expertise to help you take informed decisions about the significant transaction you’re about to make.

What does a Chartered Surveyor look for?

What we can do for you will depend on two major factors:

  • The nature of your instructions to us, and
  • The nature of the property to be surveyed

A chartered surveyor is trained to spot any visible defective areas in a residential property and we have 25 years’ experience of looking at thousands of houses! So whatever the style, age or location of the building, we have the local knowledge, tools and expertise to assess the condition of the property and provide an expert valuation.

Our in-depth inspections can identify observable areas of potential concern. An internal inspection can spot issues such as rot, damp, and water damage. An external inspection could find issues such as missing tiles or poor-quality brickwork.  We can make you aware of any access issues, limitations of the plot, dodgy neighbours, or unpleasant smells that may require further investigation.

You will get a comprehensive written report from us that will tell you in plain language about anything we find, even if its all good news! This is always backed up with a conversation to run through and contextualise your property.

We can cover any residential property within a 25-mile radius of our Amersham office, including Hemel Hempstead, Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Maidenhead, Windsor, Slough, and St Albans. We can also survey properties in Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Princes Risborough, Thame, Chesham, Berkhamsted, Tring, Harrow, Pinner, and Uxbridge plus all the villages in between. And we frequently also travel to parts of North, West and Central London.

We have a range of different residential property surveys available. If you’re not sure which type is suitable for your circumstances, then please contact us and we’ll be happy to chat through the options with you.
